DAY 1 St Lucia – Wildlife (Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park) – Private Reserve

Today starts our encounter with the wildlife of Africa! We drive north towards the subtropical coast and bushveld of Zululand – home of the mighty Zulu nation.   Our first stop is the village of St Lucia.  Embark on a boat cruise on the famous lake St Lucia (proclaimed a World Heritage Site in December 1999). Crocodiles, hippos and birds such as the fish eagle, herons and egrets are in abundance. Then travel to the Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park where the rhino was saved from extinction and home to the shy nyala, as well as the Big Five. We exit the park early evening and drive to our private lodge for dinner and overnight. Overnight Zulu Nyala Game Lodge

DAY 2   Swaziland

An early morning wake up call for an exciting open vehicle wildlife safari. After an early breakfast we do a last drive in search of game through this magnificent reserve.  Then we head northwards and continue to Swaziland. From Onverwacht border post follow a scenic route via Nhlangano to Manzini where crossing every mountain leads to a new vista. We stop at the well-known local craft market in the Malkerns Valley. Here we visit  Swazi Candles where the artists hand-mould wax into interesting figures. There is also a batik  factory outlet and other interesting shops. Our overnight stop is situated in the mountains just outside Mhlambanyatsi. Overnight Forester’s Arms.

DAY 3  Kruger National Park

Today we travel through Mbabane, the capital of Swaziland, and visit the Ngwenya Glass factory where all the items are hand made from recycled glass. We continue through magnificent mountain scenery via Pigg’s Peak and leave Swaziland entering the Kruger National Park in the south.  We devote the day to game viewing on a true African safari experience.

DAY 4  Panoramic Route

Today we spend most of the day in the reserve searching for game until mid afternoon when we leave this paradise of the wild.  We drive to Hazyview and follow a scenic route to Sabie, where we overnight at the Ligna Lodge.

DAY 5 Panoramic Route – Johannesburg

After an early breakfast, we visit Pilgrim’s Rest (an old gold mining town declared a National Monument), the Pinnacle, God’s Window, Lisbon Falls, Bourke’s Luck Potholes and the Three Rondavels view site at the Blyde River Canyon. The final leg of our trip takes us through the mountains, Ohrigstad and Lydenburg to Johannesburg where we arrive late afternoon.

What to bring

Binoculars, camera, bird book, insect repellent, sunscreen, torch. An anti-malaria drug is recommended from November to April. A valid passport as we enter Swaziland. Please check whether you will need a visa to enter Swaziland. Ensure you have a multi entry visa into South Africa if you need a visa to enter into South Africa.

What to wear

Comfortable, preferably neutral coloured cool clothes for the wildlife experiences. Well worn-in walking shoes. A set of warmer clothing with a jacket for the evening and morning safaris and during our winter months from May through August.

DAY 1    Durban – Drakensberg Mountains – Sani Pass We depart at around 09h00 for your tour to the Sani Pass and Natal Midlands. Drive inland to Pietermaritzburg, the capital of KwaZulu-Natal, for a brief city tour. Stop at the railway station where Mahatma Gandhi was thrown off the train because of the colour of his skin. Enter the waiting room where, in the silence of the night, he formulated his philosophy of passive resistance. Continue to Howick and visit the 100m high Howick Falls. Next, we stop at the monument erected on the spot where Nelson Mandela was arrested in 1961 . Continue through an area of gentle pastoral beauty called the Natal Midlands. We pass through grassy plains scattered with villages and lush farmlands where plump cattle and thoroughbred horses graze. Then further through Underberg, a picturesque little village situated in the foothills of the majestic Drakensberg Mountains. Our hotel is in the lap of the mountain with peaks towering up to 3400m above sea level. The afternoon is at your leisure to participate in some of the organised hikes into the mountain or explore the area on your own. Overnight at the Sani Pass Premier Hotel. DAY 2  Sani Pass – Lesotho – Durban After breakfast we set off to Sani Pass, named after the primitive people who lived in the area millennia ago, on a four-wheel drive with hair raising bends and breathtaking views to the top of the mountain.  We visit the locals in their homes and taste some of the local cuisine if available! Lunch is served in the highest pub in Africa at the top in the Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho some 3000m above sea level. 2 Day Wildlife Highlights Durban Safari (Code: SCDH)

DAY 1   Durban – Zululand – Hluhluwe Imfolozi Park (Big Five Safari) Our Big Five safari commences at around 08h00 from Durban and we travel northwards and turn towards the village of Eshowe (Zulu for the sound of the wind blowing through the forest).Travel further through exceptional scenic mountainous areas with beautiful vistas and past Ulundi, the Capital of the previous homeland of KwaZulu.
