Brief History of Johannesburg

Johannesburg is the biggest city in Gauteng. It was established in the year 1886 when a village managed by the Health Committee found an outcrop of gold on a farm called Langlaagte. Once the discovery was made, people from across South Africa traveled to Johannesburg for their chance to claim their fortune.  Within the span of eleven years, the population grew so much that Johannesburg was declared a municipality.

Gauteng, which translates to “Place of Gold” in the Sotho language, is known to be the smallest province in South Africa, but also the richest in the country. Johannesburg has the best Central Business District in Africa. Many of the largest national and international companies have their head office located in Johannesburg.

Tips for your next African Safari departing from Johannesburg

An African safari is an unforgettable experience for both local and international tourists alike. At Southern Circle we pride ourselves with delivering quality service for our tourists. Below we have put together a few tips for tourists who will be traveling on a safari trip for the first time when booking our exciting Johannesburg safari tours.

  1. South Africa is a hot and humid country with temperatures reaching up to 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit) in the summer season. Cool and comfortable clothing is advised.
  2. There will be a lot of driving and searching for animals on your safari adventure. Keep cool by drink lots of water to keep you hydrated.
  3. Bring along a camera to capture precious moments while on your safari tour. Your camera may come in handy when you spot one of the Big Five or any other animal during the safari.
  4. Ask your tour guide as many questions as you would like. Enquire about the different animals and plant life that you will encounter. Our guides are extremely knowledgeable on all the destinations that you will travel to.

When is the best time to go on a safari?

Although tourists can travel on a safari tour throughout the year, it is advised that the best time to go on an African safari is between April and September. This is because South Africa is experiencing much cooler and dry weather conditions during these months.

It is easier to spot the animals around this time of the year as the bushes are thin. Because of little to no rain in these months, the animals can also be seen around waterholes during the day, resting and quenching their thirst.
